My first visit to India, it was not a painting trip, I had to take time to sketch where I could. Our first stop on the first day was India Gate, I sat on the floor qnd sketched first with a chunky graphite, then the transparent watercolour and finally some ink marks.
Designed by Edwin Lutyens India Gate is the Indian War Memorial, soldiers of the Indian Army who died between 1914 - 1921 in the First World War, in France, Flanders, Mesopotamia, Persia, East Africa, Gallipoli and elsewhere 13,300 servicemen's names, including some soldiers and officers from the United Kingdom, are inscribed on the gate.
